hey everyone! there’s a brand new hip hop group from the PHILIPPINES i’d like to introduce you to: The Vibe Team! i had the pleasure of getting to know these very hard working and talented individuals while i was teaching in Manila. this is only a taste of what they’re capable of.
During my visit, i had a hard time adjusting to the lifestyle because although life in LA has been pretty hard, the majority of the Philippines is going through a lot worse than most of us can imagine. We think we know, but we DON’T. As a Filipino-American, I thought I KNEW, but I didn’t! I was completely culture shocked to see children and families homeless on the street, graffiti and trash nearly everywhere, and people—even kids begging for money from anyone, everyday! What inspired me about this group was their humility, generosity, devotion to the Lord, and dedication to dance amidst their busy schedules or rough living conditions. they have hearts the size of the world and are some of the most selfless people i’ve ever met in a country suffering from poverty almost everywhere i looked. i didn’t realize my home country was this way. What a wake up call!

I’ve always been a very shy person and always been very doubtful of my own skills and my own talent. So what I take from dancing is… I just want to get better at expressing myself. I want to be able to express myself fully without, y’kno.. having to follow any rules. You know, if I have ideas in my head, I’ve always just been afraid to just DO IT or SAY IT, but dancing has kinda provided me an outlet… for me to expand my creativity. Yes, I want to do music videos. I do want to do tours. I wanna do all of these things, but what I FIRST wanna get from dance is the ability to be BOLD and to be NOT AFRAID of what I have to express, or the way that I feel music… the way that I interpret things. I just wanna be able to get better at doing that and expressing “ME.”

6 years ago, freshman year @ UCI, i saw this fool freestyling on this brand new campus where we both would spend the next few years of our lives. we competed in kaba modern’s annual dance-a-thon that year… little did i know back then, that he would be one of the most influential friends to me. it’s been my pleasure to witness his transformation over the years as well as be surrounded with his company and energy…
as well as anthony—we’d meet in the morning w/ allibon and victor kim to eat breakfast @ our dorms.. then walk to BIO together where we wouldn’t pay attention to the professor.. just pass notes back and forth to each other.
it’s been so long and i’m just proud of everyone for how much they’ve grown, where they’ve been, and how much they’ve accomplished.
